Description: Lime is manufactured by heating crushed limestone in a very hot fire such as is produced by coal or charcoal, inside an enclosure, usually a kiln. Such a kiln takes the form of a conical stone or brick structure, open at the top to form a chimney, and with an opening at the bottom. Alternating layers of crushed limestone and, e.g., charcoal are stacked inside, usually from the top, the fire is ignited, and the bottom opening is sealed up all but an airway. The contents are left to smolder until the limestone is reduced to a whitish powder. The powdered lime is then used in other processes/products such as agriculture, concrete and glassmaking, among others.

This is one such site. Like many other Island places, this one is currently deserted, in that no one is in evidence, though it is by no means deserted. Its proximity to a rock quarry, from which barges regularly depart downriver, suggests an outlet for its products. The place has an open contract to provide lime for WolphStrykes & Wulfsdottir Glass & Paper Shop, for example.

It is possible to ferret out scattered clues to links with other Island places, here.
